Friends Until the End!

Every once in a while, you come across a series that ends up defying your expectations to how it will unfold based on how it starts. But all too often we readers have certain expectations for things because there is so much in this medium that gets told and retold with more or less variations on a theme.

From the very beginning, there was a certain expectation placed on Nettaigyo wa Yuki ni Kogareru that the author wanted to avoid so as to tell a different kind of story than one that you would expect at first glance. I for one appreciate that Nettaigyo is not like every other generic manga out there, and that the effort Makoto Hagino put in to tell a story inspired by Masuji Ibuse's "Salamander" short story is immense, with constant allusions, symbolism, and callbacks to earlier events to tie everything together.

Nettaigyo is far more than the sum of its parts, and tells a story more rich than what may appear on the surface without delving into the intricacies that Hagino wove through the story, and most of that cannot even be adequately appreciated without either re-reading it, or reading it all at once now that it's complete. Those are the things that make this series stand out from so many others, and even though it could have potentially been more popular had Hagino written a more conventional tale, as the old adage goes, "The candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long." The mark of a good series is not in its overall popularity, but how well it tells its story, and if Hagino is guilty of anything, it's telling a good story, so this is a series I will dearly miss.

And so, here is the final chapter of Nettaigyo wa Yuki ni Kogareru, a self-styled epilogue for the series to see these characters one last time. If you enjoy the series, please consider buying the official volumes from Viz if you haven't already, with the first six volumes out so far.

Be the Change!

After a long wait, A Lazy Guy Woke Up as a Girl One Morning returns with volume 3, the final volume. Yes, the manga ended its serialization last December, so it hopefully won't take that long to finish this volume and series. This chapter was also the last one done in the web comic version, so everything after this is new content in that sense.

The End is Just Another Beginning!

At last, after working on this series for about two and a half years, Fukakai na Boku no Subete o ends with chapter 28. Working on this series was a learning experience for sure. Stylistically, the way certain terms and lines were translated changed over the course of the series to be more in line with what readers versed in this type of series would expect. Fan translation is never perfect, especially for a series like this where what words are chosen will affect how the readers perceive it, but I believe the translation got much better over time and I'm happy with the end result.

For the series taken as a whole, there was a lot of contention very early on based solely on the concept. Even I was a little unsure about the series early on, and I felt that it wasn't even a series that I was going to work on until chapter 3 came out. This was a very polarizing series, with one side really into it, and the other side intensely hating it, and there was really no middle ground from what I could tell from comments on various websites. That was new for me, since I don't think I had ever done a series that was this contentious from the very beginning.

But the series definitely got better overtime. I'm okay with criticizing a series for bad writing, pacing and whatnot, but the growth of the series can only be appreciated after having read the series from beginning to end. The art also improved immensely, going from a very stereotypical moe style where the characters looked far younger than they were supposed to be, to something a lot more what you would expect from a skilled artist. The way Konayama drew hands and bone structure was also something they focused on throughout the series and overall got better as it progressed, something that is rarely seen in this type of series.

Overall, I enjoyed working on the series. It was a fun little series with memorable characters and an engaging plot. The series didn't perhaps offer everything I may have wanted to see, since a lot of the characters didn't get fleshed out that much other than a chapter or two, with most of it focused on Mogumo and Mogumo's family. So for that reason, I wish it could have been a little longer so we could have seen more of these characters. I'd love to read a spin-off focused solely on either Mei or Kotone, but I guess you can't have everything.

Lastly, if you enjoyed the series, then consider buying the official volumes from SSE with the third volume coming out next month. It not only supports the author, but also affects the licensing of future similar series. As I said, fan translation isn't perfect, so if you want a more professional take on the series, consider picking up the official releases.

And with that, I hope you enjoy the final chapter, and I hope to see more of Kata Konayama's work in the future.

When Cross-dressing is the Only Option!

Happy Cat Day (in Japan)! To mark the occasion (not really, but whatever), here is chapter 1 to the new series How to Start a Relationship With Crossdressing (original title: Josou Kara Hajimaru Koi no Shikata, 女装からはじまる恋の仕方) by Kurotama. It's being distributed through the Cmoa website, and three chapters have already been released. The story is as follows:

Ako Kobayashi is a high school girl eagerly awaiting her prince charming to sweep her off her feet, but she has to overcome one small problem: she is so afraid of guys that she breaks out in hives whenever she comes near one. She even rejects the popular Kei Kitaooji who is the first guy to ever ask her out. However, after Kei learns of Ako's condition, he comes to school the next day dressed as a girl and asks her out again.

The premise instantly reminded me of Ayumi Komura's Usotsuki Lily in that a couple starts dating with the guy cross-dressing, but whereas that series tended to be more gag humor, this one seems to be more of a conventional romantic comedy, at least as far as conventional goes when cross-dressing is involved. So please check it out.

In the Den of Roses!

Happy Valentine's Day! To celebrate, I decided to pick up another cute series (since as I've said, several of the current projects will be complete soon) called Puberty, an All Boys School!? and Nakano-kun (original title: Shishunki to Danshikou!? to Nakano-kun, 思春期と男子校!?と中野くん) by Higashi 385. The story is as follows:

Hajime Nakano is forced by his mother to enroll at a newly opened all boys high school, and he laments over having to spend the next three years surrounded by other guys. However, he doesn't know that all of the other students are girls secretly pretending to be guys, and each of them think they are the only girl in the whole school.

The author had originally started it as a web comic they posted on Twitter, and then they updated it into a doujinshi they released back in 2016, and now it has finally been serialized as of last October in Monthly Bushiroad, which is now being posted online. Currently, only 5 chapters are available. So check out the first chapter if you like.

Why Have One if You Can Have Two?

Today, I'm pleased to announce the release of a brand new series titled I Can't Tell Which Twin is Which Sex (original title: Futago no Danjo ga Wakaranai, 双子の男女がわからない) by Hanajiro Abe. The series originally began as a short web comic Abe released starting in 2019, and then he readapted the web comic into a oneshot released here with a slightly different story last September in Kodansha's Shounen Magazine Edge. And now as of last month, the oneshot got a serialization, effectively turning the oneshot into chapter 1 of the new series, so chapter 2 was published last month in Magazine Edge. In addition to the series, I'll also be doing the few web comic chapters in the meantime, starting with chapter 0 in this release.

The story between the two versions has a few differences. For one, the twins are cousins to the main character in the web comic, whereas they are unrelated in the series. Second, there is a slight age gap between the twins and the main character in the web comic, with them being 14 and the main character being 18, whereas in the series they are all the same age, 17. The main character also has a radically different character design between the two versions. Other than that, the same basic premise is the same, although romance is now the main theme in the series, whereas that wasn't part of the web comic's original premise.

In the web comic, the unnamed main character comes to live with his aunt and twin cousins while he tries looking for work. Although he remembers that they were twin brother and sister, he is surprised too find that they both appear to be girls when he meets them again after several years, so now he can't tell which is a guy and which is a girl.

In the serialization, Takushi Hatsujou had played with a twin brother and sister when they were all kids, and he fell in love with the sister, culminating in his asking for her hand in marriage when they grew up, to which she agreed. However, they were torn apart for 10 years until Takushi is finally able to get his grandfather's permission to marry her. When they finally reunite, he is surprised to find they both look like girls. Although he knows one of them is cross-dressing, he can't tell which is a guy and which is a girl.

So if you think it sounds interesting, please check out chapter 1 of the series, and also chapter 0 of the web comic.

Embrace Your Cute Side!

As the first oneshot I've done in a while, here is Novels, a Boy and a Sailor Uniform by Norito Asazuki. It's 38 pages and was released in Big Gangan a few days ago, so naturally I just had to do it. In the story, Tsukasa Minase is an 11-year-old boy who gets asked by his next door neighbor and novelist Chifuyu Kuga to dress up as a girl to help her write her current manuscript. I thought it was a very cute oneshot, and well worth the extra time it took doing all the redraws for it.

Next up, the latest Nettaigyo chapter.

If You're Cute, Anything Goes!

Seeing as how several projects will be ending in the next couple of months, I went fishing on pixiv and found this cute web comic called A Cute Guy (original title: Kawaii Hito) by Tatsubon. So far, eight chapters have been released, and the first four are now finished. In the story, Kenzaki is a delinquent who saves her classmate Nakajima from some bullies one day, but Kenzaki still has yet to tell him that she has a crush on him.

It should be obvious as to why I picked up this web comic, so check it out if you want a cute little story.

Snuggle Up for Some Fun!

Here is the first of several bonus chapters for My First Love Was a Beautiful "Girl", the only obvious difference being that this chapter never made it to the volumes, and was instead released in its current state around the same time volume 3 was released, so I had assumed the final version was going to be released in the volume, but that was not the case. It's still a great little bonus chapter, so hope you enjoy it.

Love is Sweeter Than Candy!

It's been a long time coming, and sorry about it taking so long, but here's My First Love Was a Beautiful "Girl" chapter 14, the last chapter in terms of the story itself, as released in the third and final volume. This release also contains the bonus content at the end of the volume which adds a bit of epilogue to the characters. But this is not the end of the series in terms of the scanlation effort, since there are still the other bonus chapters released in the three volumes left to do, in addition to at least one that never made it to the volumes, so there's still more to see from these characters for the time being.

On a semi-related note, Kobayashi just ended her serialization of A Lazy Guy Woke Up as a Girl One Morning last month, so the third and final volume will probably come out either in February or March, so there's also that to look forward to. I'll probably decide to do Kobayashi's next work too whatever it is since I enjoy her work so much.
